Last summer, American brand Target (the second-largest discount store retailer in the US) released their Cat & Jack clothing line for children, which aimed to move away from archaic gender-specific designs and create more positive messages for children.
Target's Cat & Jack new range hopes to shake up the industry by getting rid of the typical ‘pink and sparkly’ clothes for girls or the ‘little heartbreaker’ t-shirts for boys. Instead, you’ll find printed t-shirts with empowering phrases such as 'Strong Like Mom', 'Kindness Matters’ and 'Smart and Strong'.
It’s refreshing to see brands and designers creating clothes that support positive messages instead of reinforcing gender-specific designs. It’s clear we’ll be seeing a lot more t-shirts which are suitable for both girls and boys in the future, whether it’s pink t-shirts for boys or inspiring messages for girls.
